Low self-esteem treatment-How we start
Once the client decides that low self-esteem is the issue they want to work on, we begin by looking at the possible origins of low self-esteem.
It is believed that the low self-esteem originates in childhood. Therefore early in therapy we explore this by looking at possible experiences that may have contributed. We explore family dynamics including relationship with parents, caregivers and siblings. We also look at school life to see if there were incidents of bullying or feeling like 'the odd one out'.
There could have been repeated instances where self-esteem has been affected or one major event that has contributed toward a negative mindset to the present day.
We also look at adult experiences including relationships, work experiences to see if they have contributed towards low self-esteem.
This part of the therapy can be a very useful starting point to identity the origins of low self-esteem.
